Material Selection Guide

When to consider Hastelloy B-2

This guide helps buyers connect service conditions with the typical advantage of Alloy 625. Final selection should consider medium concentration, temperature, pressure, fabrication, availability and budget.

Service Requirement Why Alloy B-2 Helps Common Product Form Buyer Note
Hydrochloric acid service High nickel and molybdenum contents provide excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid over a broad range of concentrations and temperatures. Pipe, tube, plate, fittings, flanges and valve components Confirm acid concentration, temperature, pressure and contamination level.
Sulfuric acid in reducing conditions The nickel-molybdenum composition provides strong resistance to many sulfuric acid environments when oxidizing contaminants are controlled. Plate, pipe, tube, bar and fabricated vessels Check concentration, temperature, aeration and ferric-ion content.
Acetic and phosphoric acid processing Alloy B-2 resists many reducing organic and inorganic acid environments used in chemical production. Reactors, heat exchangers, piping and pump components Review the complete process chemistry and possible oxidizing impurities.
Wet hydrogen chloride gas The alloy provides excellent resistance to wet HCl and related reducing chloride environments. Pipe, tube, fittings and fabricated process equipment Confirm moisture, temperature, pressure and shutdown conditions.
Pitting and stress corrosion cracking High molybdenum content and the nickel-rich matrix provide useful resistance to localized corrosion and chloride-related cracking. Sheet, plate, pipe, tube and fasteners Evaluate crevices, deposits, residual stress and process contaminants.
Welded chemical equipment Low carbon, silicon and iron contents reduce harmful precipitation compared with older Alloy B compositions. Plate, sheet, pipe, tube and fittings Use qualified welding procedures, matching filler and rapid cooling after solution annealing.
Strongly oxidizing environments Alloy B-2 is optimized for reducing media and is generally not the preferred choice for strongly oxidizing acids or oxidizing salts. Selection must be reviewed before supply Check for ferric ions, cupric ions, free chlorine, oxygen and other oxidizing contaminants.

FAQ

Hastelloy B-2 questions from buyers

Find practical answers about procurement, standards, fabrication and industrial applications.

Hastelloy B-2 is mainly used for equipment handling hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, acetic acid, phosphoric acid and other strongly reducing chemicals. Typical applications include reactors, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, process piping, pumps, valves and acid-production equipment.

Yes. UNS N10665 is the standardized UNS designation for Hastelloy B-2. The material may also be identified as Alloy B-2, Nickel Alloy B-2, W.Nr. 2.4617 or NiMo28.

Its high nickel and molybdenum content provides excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid across a broad range of concentrations and temperatures, provided that strongly oxidizing contaminants are not present.

Alloy B-2 is designed primarily for reducing environments. Strong oxidizers, ferric salts, cupric salts, free chlorine and other oxidizing contaminants can significantly increase corrosion, so the complete process chemistry must be reviewed before selection.

Both are nickel-molybdenum alloys for reducing acids. Hastelloy B-3 generally provides improved thermal stability and fabrication characteristics, while B-2 remains widely specified for existing equipment, established designs and replacement components.

YSN128 can quote plate, sheet, strip, round bar, rod, wire, seamless or welded pipe and tube, forgings, flanges, fittings, fasteners and matching welding products. Custom cutting, machining allowance and drawing-based supply can be discussed.

Common standards include ASTM B333 for plate, sheet and strip, ASTM B335 for rod and bar, ASTM B622 for seamless pipe and tube, ASTM B619 for welded pipe, ASTM B626 for welded tube, ASTM B564 for forgings and flanges, ASTM B366 for fittings and the corresponding ASME specifications.

Yes. Alloy B-2 can be welded using qualified nickel-alloy procedures, clean joint surfaces, controlled heat input and compatible filler metals such as ERNiMo-7 or ENiMo-7. The welding procedure should follow the applicable project code and service requirements.

Yes. EN10204 3.1 material certificates can be supplied on request, including heat number, chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat-treatment condition and applicable inspection results.

Please send the grade or UNS number, product form, dimensions, quantity, applicable standard, delivery condition, certificate requirements, destination and complete service conditions. For corrosion review, include the chemical composition, concentration, temperature, pressure and possible oxidizing contaminants.
