Monel 401

Monel 401 is primarily specified for precision electrical and electronic applications requiring medium electrical resistivity, a very low temperature coefficient of resistance and stable performance over a broad temperature range. The alloy also provides useful corrosion resistance, good ductility, satisfactory brazing characteristics and reliable forming performance. Monel 401 is mainly used for wire-wound precision resistors, electrical shunts, bimetal contacts, measuring instruments, strain-sensitive components and specialized electrical or electronic assemblies requiring stable resistance over temperature.

Yes. UNS N04401 is the standardized UNS designation for Monel 401. Comparable electrical resistance alloy designations may include W.Nr. 2.0842 and CuNi44Mn1, subject to confirmation of the required chemistry and electrical properties.

Monel 401 contains substantially more copper and less nickel than Monel 400. It is designed primarily for controlled electrical resistance and a low temperature coefficient, while Monel 400 is more commonly selected for general marine and chemical corrosion service.

The typical electrical resistivity is approximately 0.498 µΩ·m, equivalent to about 294 ohm-cmil per foot at approximately 21 °C. Final resistance requirements should be specified for the ordered size and temper.

It combines medium electrical resistivity with a very low temperature coefficient of resistance, allowing resistor values to remain comparatively stable as temperature changes.
