Monel R-405 is commonly specified for high-volume machined components requiring the corrosion resistance of Monel 400 combined with substantially improved machinability. Monel R-405 is mainly used as automatic screw-machine stock for fasteners, valve components, meter parts, pump components, instrument fittings, nuts, screws, shafts and other precision-machined parts requiring nickel-copper corrosion resistance.

Yes. Monel 405 commonly refers to Monel R-405. Its standardized UNS designation is N04405, and it may also be identified as Alloy R-405, W.Nr. 2.4363 or NiCu30FeS.

Monel R-405 is the free-machining version of Monel 400. Its sulfur content is controlled between approximately 0.025% and 0.060%, producing sulfide inclusions that improve chip breaking during machining.

Monel R-405 has essentially the same general corrosion resistance as Monel 400 in many marine, alkaline and reducing environments. Actual suitability should still be confirmed against the complete service conditions.

The additional sulfur forms nickel-copper sulfide inclusions that act as chip breakers. This improves chip control and makes the alloy suitable for automatic screw machines and high-volume turning operations.

YSN128 can quote round bar, rod, hexagonal bar, square bar, wire, fasteners and finished machined components. Other forms can be discussed as custom project orders, subject to production-route confirmation.

The principal product standard is ASTM B164 or ASME SB164 for rod, bar and wire. Other referenced specifications include SAE AMS 4674, SAE AMS 7234, Federal QQ-N-281 and project-specific requirements.

Yes. Monel R-405 can be joined by standard welding, brazing and soldering methods using procedures similar to those used for Monel 400. Compatible filler metals commonly include ERNiCu-7 wire and ENiCu-7 covered electrodes.

Monel R-405 is generally not recommended for forging because its sulfide inclusions are optimized for machining rather than extensive hot deformation. Monel 400 is usually a more appropriate choice for forged components.
