Nickel Alloy Grade Data Sheet

HAYNES 242

HAYNES 242 is an age-hardenable nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy combining high strength, relatively low thermal expansion, fatigue resistance, thermal stability and useful oxidation resistance. A long-range ordering reaction during aging substantially increases strength while retaining useful ductility, making the alloy suitable for structural service up to approximately 650-705 °C. Typical applications include gas-turbine seal rings, containment rings, casings, duct segments, high-strength fasteners, springs, rocket nozzles, pumps, extrusion screws and equipment exposed to high-temperature fluorine, hydrogen fluoride or selected fluoride-salt environments.

FAQ

HAYNES 242 questions from buyers

Find practical answers about procurement, standards, fabrication and industrial applications.

HAYNES 242 is used for gas-turbine seal and containment rings, casings, duct segments, high-strength fasteners, springs, rocket nozzles, pumps, extrusion screws and selected equipment exposed to hot fluorine, hydrogen fluoride or fluoride salts.

Yes. UNS N10242 is the standardized UNS designation for HAYNES 242 base material and is also used for its matching ERNiMo-12 welding filler chemistry.

The alloy is normally solution annealed and rapidly cooled before aging. A representative aging treatment is approximately 649 °C for 24-48 hours followed by air cooling, but the exact cycle must follow the product and purchase specification.

The alloy provides its strongest combination of tensile and creep properties up to approximately 650-705 °C. Its oxidation resistance can remain useful to about 815 °C, but this higher environmental limit is not a universal load-bearing temperature.

YSN128 can quote plate, sheet, strip, round bar, rod, wire, seamless or welded pipe and tube, forgings, rings, flanges, fittings, fasteners and matching ERNiMo-12 welding wire.

Common standards include ASTM B434 for plate and sheet, ASTM B573 for rod and bar, ASTM B622 for seamless tube, ASTM B619 or B626 for welded tubular products, ASTM B564 for forgings and ASTM B366 for fittings.

Yes. HAYNES 242 can be welded using conventional GTAW and GMAW procedures with matching ERNiMo-12 filler metal. For the best overall mechanical properties, forming and welding are normally followed by solution annealing and aging.

Please send the UNS or alloy grade, product form, dimensions, quantity, ASTM or ASME specification, solution and aging requirements, operating temperature, design load, inspection requirements, certificate type and destination.
