Nickel Alloy Grade Data Sheet

Inconel 718

Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium alloy combining high strength, corrosion resistance and good fabrication characteristics over a wide temperature range. Niobium and molybdenum provide strong age-hardening and solid-solution-strengthening effects, while the relatively slow precipitation response gives Alloy 718 good resistance to post-weld cracking. It is widely specified for aerospace engines, gas turbines, oil and gas equipment, nuclear systems, high-strength fasteners, cryogenic components and other heavily loaded applications.

FAQ

Inconel 718 questions from buyers

Find practical answers about procurement, standards, fabrication and industrial applications.

Inconel 718 is widely used for aerospace engines, gas turbines, turbine discs, shafts, high-strength fasteners, oil and gas equipment, nuclear components, cryogenic systems and other heavily loaded parts.

Yes. UNS N07718 is the standardized UNS designation for Inconel 718. The alloy may also be identified as Alloy 718, Nickel Alloy 718, W.Nr. 2.4668 or NiCr19Fe19Nb5Mo3.

Alloy 718 is strengthened by solution heat treatment followed by controlled aging. Niobium is the principal age-hardening addition, while titanium, aluminum and molybdenum also contribute to its high strength and structural stability.

YSN128 can quote plate, sheet, strip, round bar, rod, wire, pipe, tube, forgings, rings, flanges, fittings, fasteners and welding wire. Heat treatment, cutting, machining allowance and drawing-based production can also be discussed.

Common specifications include ASTM B637 for bars and forgings, ASTM B670 for plate and sheet, ASTM B983 for seamless pipe and tube, AMS 5596, AMS 5597, AMS 5662, AMS 5663, AMS 5664, AMS 5589 and AMS 5832.

Yes. Alloy 718 has good weldability compared with many precipitation-hardened superalloys because its strengthening reaction occurs relatively slowly. Compatible filler metal such as ERNiFeCr-2 may be used, followed by the heat treatment required by the approved welding procedure.

Yes. Inconel 718 can be supplied solution treated, solution treated and aged, or in another specified condition. The required ASTM or AMS specification must be stated because the heat-treatment cycle directly affects grain structure and mechanical properties.

Please send the product form, dimensions, quantity, applicable ASTM, AMS or project standard, heat-treatment condition, mechanical requirements, inspection requirements, destination and service temperature. Drawings should be included for forgings, fasteners and machined components.
