Cobalt L-605, commonly identified as HAYNES® 25 alloy, is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-tungsten solid-solution-strengthened superalloy with excellent high-temperature strength, good oxidation resistance and very good sulfidation resistance. It can be conventionally formed, hot worked and welded, and offers excellent resistance to galling and cavitation. Typical applications include aerospace hot-section components, gas-turbine parts, bearing balls and races, springs, combustion hardware, missile components and high-temperature structural assemblies.

Cobalt L-605, also called HAYNES 25, is used for aerospace hot-section components, gas-turbine parts, bearing balls and races, springs, combustion hardware, missile components, fasteners and assemblies requiring high strength, wear resistance and resistance to galling.

Yes. HAYNES 25 is the HAYNES International designation for the cobalt-nickel-chromium-tungsten alloy commonly known as L-605. Both are associated with UNS R30605, but the applicable AMS specification and product condition should still be stated on the purchase order.

HAYNES 25 is particularly effective for long-term high-temperature service from approximately 650 to 980 °C. The 980 °C value refers to suitable oxidation-resistant service and is not automatically an allowable design temperature. Stress, atmosphere, exposure time and geometry must be evaluated.

The alloy is normally furnished solution heat treated. A typical final treatment is 1175-1230 °C for a time based on section thickness, followed by rapid cooling or water quenching. Intermediate annealing below the final solution temperature can precipitate carbides, so a subsequent final solution treatment is normally required for optimum properties.

Yes. HAYNES 25 can be welded by GTAW, GMAW, SMAW, electron-beam and resistance welding. Matching AMS 5796 filler is commonly used, while AMS 5797 electrodes are available for shielded metal arc welding. Preheat is generally not required, interpass temperature should remain below 93 °C, and submerged arc welding is not recommended.

AMS 5537 covers sheet, plate, strip and foil; AMS 5759 and MIL-C-24252D cover billet, rod, bar and forgings; AMS 5796 covers bare welding rods and wire; AMS 5797 covers coated electrodes; and MMPDS 6.4.1 provides aerospace design data. NACE MR0175 or ISO 15156 may apply to specified sour-service projects.
